Why Open Source?

Open source is one of the ideas that have helped make the internet what it is today.

The fundamental principle is that; the more people contributing to the development of the software, the better it becomes.

Therefore, the source code that the applications and services are comprised of should be open so that everyone can help developing it.

The idea of open source was prominent in the 1960's when the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) was developed. Many famous products today like Linux, Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, Apache and the web browser Firefox are based on this very concept. The term "open source" was coined 1998 when a group of developers in the free software community named it so at a strategy meeting to describe the movement.

Why is open source good?

Open source programs that have made a mark on the market have thousands of developers that manage the product. Few software have such a massive devoted crop of developers linked with them as the open source tools do. To top it off, all this expertise is absolutely free. Why pay major licensing and annual fees to a software supplier if there is an equivalent or even better alternative that is free?

It is also a fact that the freedom that comes from being able to change consultants and developers within the open source domain is not achievable if you chose a licensed product. Open source implies that the source code, a program, a service or a function is comprised of is open for all to see, copy and modify. If something is open source, anyone one can download the source code and use it to develop their own products.

If a product is based on open source, it does not mean that it is not of high quality. Products released as open source do not imply that you can do whatever you want with the code. There are a number of open source licences that state what is permitted. The most common open source licences are the ones approved by the organisation called Open Source Initiative.

Choosing an open source product to create websites is natural for us at Andrimner Webagency. Open source is one of the fundamental building blocks of the Internet. It should be free and everyone should participate in sharing. Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are some of the most renowned open source web tools on the market.
